TINDER BOX (above)
Handmade by Peter Goebel. *Historic reproduction.* This wooden box is completely handmade, and antiqued to look all of 300 years old! Boxes like these were used to store fire making materials, and to provide a place to start the fire. The sliding lid opens to reveal two compartments. One used to store tow, flint and steel, has a small lid that can also be used to extinguish fire. The other compartment was used to actually build the fire in! Once the fire was started in this small compartment, it was used to light a spall. The spall was the carried to the hearth and used to light the fire. The fire in the hearth box was then smothered with the small lid. Although every colonial hearth would have had such a box, few are examples are left as they were eventually burned up, and probably tossed into the fire they helped to build! This is a really nice piece that will add realism to an old hearth. Dated: 1690-1720. Origin: English/American. Materials: various woods. Dimensions: 11" X 5" X 3" deep.

SPALLS (above)
Handmade by Peter Goebel. *Historic reproduction.* Spalls are essentially 18th century matches. They were used during the time of Christ, and continued to be used into the early 20th century. A spark is captured on a piece of char, the spall is touched to the glowing char and ignites when gently blown on. The spall can then be carried to light a fire, or candle. Spalls are slivers of wood with sulfur on one end. They must be used with EXTREME caution. When lit, a spall must be gently blown out (NEVER SHAKE a spall, as molten sulfur will fly off the splint.) If extinguished promptly, a spall may be reused several times. Dated: all periods. Origins: universal. Materials: wood, sulfur. Dimensions: 5" long, sold in bundles of 10.
