HOROLOGIUM NOCTIS or NIGHT DIAL (above)
Handmade by Peter Goebel. *Historic reproduction*
The Horologium Noctis, or night dial, was used to tell the approximate local time at night by the rotation of the constellations. This horologium is set up for 3 constellations. Reproduced from about 20 originals, this is what a brazier would have made in about 1750 for a client. Although this piece dates to about 1750, night dials were used from at least the 1200's through the 19th century. Makes a great demo, or teaching tool!
Measures about 3 and 1/2 inches diameter by 7 and 1/2 inches long. It is made in solid brass, and is smoothly finished.
HOROLOGIUM NOCTIS or NIGHT DIAL $165.00
You wouldn't put out to sea without your horologium would you Christopher?
