Spalls are essentially 18th century matches. They were used during the time of Christ, and continued to be used into the early 20th century. A spark is captured on a piece of char, the spall is touched to the glowing char and ignites when gently blown on. The spall can then be carried to light a fire, or candle. Spalls are slivers of wood with sulfur on one end.
Spalls must be used with EXTREME caution. When lit, a spall must be gently blown out (NEVER SHAKE a spall, as molten sulfur will fly off the splint). If extinguished promptly, a spall may be reused several times.

This charming footwarmer is a favorite! It's moderate size makes it easy to carry. The top is domed, and the piece has overall piercings in a lovely design. Sturdy brass with a wire bail. A hinged door allows acsess to the ember tray. This is a very refined piece for the more "discriminating" cold feet! Dated: 1725. Origin: Dutch/American. Materials: brass. Dimensions: 6" X 4" tall.

This is a very fine reproduction of an antique original in our own collection. This charming brazier has two heart shaped handles, a cast iron removable grate, and a copper ash pan.
PLEASE USE CAUTION!
Use braziers only in very well ventillated areas. NEVER use a brazier to heat a tent or any enclosed space. Using a brazier without adequate ventillation will result in asphyxiation.
Dated: mid 17th through the mid 18th centuries. Origin: English/American. Materials: cast iron, copper. Dimensions: 7" tall by 10" wide at the handles. Weighs 8 lb.

The problem: transporting hot coals. The solution: a coal carrier. It can probably be safely said that every colonial home had one! Heavy copper or brass with a hinged lid and hand-turned wood handle, stained black.

Curfew (above)

In the 11th century, William The Conqueror ordered all fires in England to be covered when the church bells rang out in the evening. This became our 'curfew' from a borrowed French word 'couvre-feu', or, fire-cover. Curfews such as ours were used in America through the 1890s. Our curfew is 16" wide, 9" deep and 10" tall. It is heavy 32-ounce copper, riveted together with an iron handle, and will last for years of use. It banks the fire for easier starting in the morning.

Small Brazier Scoop (above)
A nice brazier-size ember scoop to fill your foot warmer, brazier or cookware. A Georgian styled piece tapering from 4 to 3 inches wide, and about 6 1/2 inches long, it measures about 13 inches with the handle. Reproduced from English originals. Copper with a maple handle.
