While actually a reproduction, this was just too handy to pass up. This is a cover, originally for the axe blade on a pickaxe...a Roman pickaxe ! I will make this to fit, all that's needed is the measurement of the blade.

A reproduction of a 17 th or 18 th century quadrant. Literally one fourth of a sextant. They first appear in the 1300, but the idea goes back to Ancient Greece. It is used by sighting the North Star..Polaris, and telling your latitude by the string with its 17 th century plumb bob. This would tell you if it was time to head for shore at your desired port.

Copied from an original, our flask dates from the 17th to 18th centuries. Made from non-sparking copper with a friction fit lid attached with a chain. Measures 4" wide by 5 and 1/2 tall. A great alternative to a horn.

American naval, as seen on board the USS Constitution. Dated to the early 19th century. Cup measures 3 1/2" round by 3 1/2" tall. Plate measures 7" around the bottom, 8 1/2" around the top, and 1 7/8" deep.

This device was used to make shot, and has been dated to the mid 16th through 18th century. Prince Rupert of Germany wrote: "... (as) long as you observe the right temper of the heat, the lead will constantly drop into very round shot, without so much as one with a tail in as many pounds ... fall to be round and without tail, there is Auripigmentum (arsenic trisulphide) enough put in and the temper of the heat is right."
He also described the shot maker as a "round plate of copper ... the hollow wherein is to be about three inches over, the bottom lower than the brims about half an inch, pierced with small holes."
In 1618, it is recorded that 3 shot makers and 600 pounds of lead was given to every 35 men sent to Virginia. Our reproduction is made in copper, and measures 9" in diameter.

Brass Powder Charger (above)

Ca. 1600. Based on originals in a private collection, but similar to those found at Williamsburg. Made with a slightly tapered body. The charger has two loops on the body to hang it by, and has a perforated extension on the lid.
Capacity: Over 120 grains 2F. Dimensions: height: 2 and 3/8 inches; top diameter: 7/16 inches; base diameter: 3/4 inch.

Artillery Quill Primer (above)

Documented from the French & Indian through Revolutionary War period. This primer was used as a faster method of ignition, as the tube is a lot smaller than the touch hole of the cannon.
Caution! The primer will become a missile upon actual firing ... keep everything you want to take home with you away from the area over the touch hole!
Brass, about 4 inches long, 1/8 inch diameter with a one-inch dished top.

Horologium Noctis or Night Dial (above)

The Horologium Noctis, or night dial, was used to tell the approximate local time at night by the rotation of the constellations. This horologium is set up for 3 constellations, and has been reproduced from about 20 originals. Although this piece dates to about 1750, night dials were used from at least the 1200's through the 19th century. Makes a great demo, or teaching tool!
Measures about 3 and 1/2 inches diameter by 7 and 1/2 inches long. It is made in solid brass, and is smoothly finished. You wouldn't put out to sea without your horologium, would you, Christopher?

A design adapted from our Pocket Flask, which was in turn adapted from a 17th century musketeer's oil bottle. This priming flask has a circular body with a long spout, and two lugs to hang it form a cord by. Hand hammered copper, tin lined. Comes with a cork stopper. Cord not included.
Dated: 17th century style. Origin: French. Materials: copper. Dimensions: 2 1/2" dia. x 1 1/4" deep. 1/3 cup capacity.

Bosun's Pipe Hanger (above)
A status symbol for a bosun's mate, the suspension device for the pipe. A chain for a necklace is attached to the top two rings, and a short piece of chain attached the pipe to the lower ring. From an 18th century painting. The slightly domed face is perfect for engraving! Brass, soldered rings.

Priming Powder Flask (above)
From a portrait of Kenneth Sutherland, 3rd Lord Duffus of Scotland, comes the inspiration for this reproduction priming powder flask in brass. Measuring 6 1/2 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. The top is removeable and the flask has 7 1/4 inch lugs on each side.
Great for portrayals of Scots, Jacobites, or anything pre-1734.
